Comments from Gimmick Command: Rocks, Rockets, Resumes, . . . and Rockets Again! Ok

And now some more comments from Gimmick Command . . .

You might have seen my story about the development of my life and career. Certainly, love of the Western States and my love for the Space Program have propelled my career forward in ways that are unimaginable, . . . and obtainable for ANYONE with a similar, dedicated passion.

That passion pulls candidates forward in the standings for applying to jobs in the Space Program, even if they don’t get the first job they apply to. In an increasingly heavy social media environment, both resumes and LinkedIn profiles together need to convey that passion to help them be seen and heard my potential employers in the Space Program. Ultimately, they WILL get in through perseverance, further education, and so forth.

I found that to be true when I felt led to pursue a Systems Engineering Masters Degree, in amongst my duties with Rocky Mountain Resumes LLC.

Helping professional job seekers further their dream career path was a true blessing. But it made me think of my history in the Space Program.

I contacted a Career Coach last year in June and talked with her about the crossroads I was finding myself at. She helped me realize that helping job seekers was a good thing to do, but that I should focus more on STEM disciplines (similar to my background and expertise) and to once again pursue a Space Program position, either working for an established company or my own efforts (matter expert, consultant, system engineer of Space Systems, etc).

I’m pleased to say I chose the online Masters in Systems Engineering program (from UCCS in Colorado Springs) and another position in the Space Program which I secured within a few months.

The caveat was that I needed to move from Colorado Springs to the Phoenix, AZ area. I found that to be a blessing too because it’s more affordable and Arizona’s economic growth is 3rd in the US as of April 2019. Plus, the weather’s better for some family members who were suffering from chronic issues related to a car accident 2 Β½ years ago with the stable and warmer weather. A win-win situation.

This all made me remember watching Star Trek II, and I remembered that James T. Kirk had accepted an Admiralty position over Star Fleet Academy . . . but he was NOT fulfilled. The intervention of two of his best friends Dr. McCoy and Spock convinced him that he was β€œflying a <censored> computer console when he (Kirk) wanted to be hopping galaxies” and that β€œit was a mistake to accept a promotion, because command of a starship was always his (Kirk’s) first/best destiny”. I don’t feel unfulfilled as a resume writer or STEM Career Coach, but I do know that the Space Program is my first/best professional destiny.

With that in mind, I accepted the Space Program position and have decided to fold my successful company Rocky Mountain Resumes LLC after a successful 2 year run and hundreds of resumes to my credit. I feel led to expand the influence and growth of STEM and Space efforts through multiple avenues beyond my rewarding experience with Rocky Mountain Resumes LLC.

It’s an exciting time for the Space Program as we see more commercial firms getting involved to avoid the politics of the early ’70s through close to 2010 that led to the frequent cancelation of promising projects (e.g. VentureStar, Altair, Ares, Saenger, and hopefully NOT SLS). The great Heroes of the Space Program going forward are not just billionaires (valid/worthy though they are) but increasingly common everyday folks that dare to dream big and reach for the sky to aid Mankind’s quest for Space.

If you’re interested in a career in the Space Program, do WHATEVER you need to do. I’m in my mid 40’s and pursuing a Masters Degree. Maybe pursuing an advanced degree might be your ticket. Perhaps pursuing your FIRST degree might be. Joining Astronomy and Rocketry Clubs (such as Tripoli Rocketry Association which I am a member of) can help you learn more as you can network with other Space Enthusiasts. Do what you need to do. If you want some ideas or Career Coaching, please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn to discuss options.
